Why wont my axiom 49 play?

i have plugged my axiom 49 in with its usb cable and it will not play music....i have tried to use it with ableton to but it still plays no music....do i need a output wire to connect to my laptop to make it work....if there is anyway i can make it make a sound with out buying and output please tell me how
