Non-Mormons: Joseph Smith a con-man?

What did Smith have to gain? Followers who he had complete power over and who would do almost anything for him, including giving him their wives, their money, their property, etc. Women who would marry him because he threatened their eternal salvation if they refused. Power is a huge draw and people will risk a lot for it.
